Walters – Inspiring Young Engineers

ICE logoWalters prides itself on their ability to develop their employees, supporting and encouraging them to achieve their academic and professional goals and an increased workload has resulted in the recruitment of a number of young engineers at different levels of the professional ladder.

First addition to the team was James Tuck, who joined Walters as a Graduate Civil Engineer. James studied civil engineering at Exeter University where he achieved a BEng Honours Degree before completing a second degree at the PGA National Training Academy followed by five years as a member of the Professional Golfers Association. James comments “Walters has provided me with the opportunity to continue a career in civil engineering where I intend to develop my skills and achieve chartered status whilst becoming a valuable asset to the Walters team”.

Jason Vincent, who has a BEng in civil engineering and an MSc in engineering and management, is a member of the Institution of Civil Engineers and actively working towards Chartered membership. Jason’s early career comprised assessing temporary works for rail structures and bridge and structural engineering design for Devon County Council.

Finally, Tom Power has joined Walters as an Apprentice Civil Engineering Technician, following in the footsteps of current Walters apprentices Sam Knowles, Callum Morgan and Joseph Meeke as part of the Heads of the Valleys Apprenticeship Scheme created to target young people living within the Valleys catchment areas.

Tom comments “I am 18 years old and even at this early stage in my career I feel I have gained invaluable hands on experience by assisting a Walters Senior Engineer at the Pant Y Wal Windfarm, near Bridgend.  I am also currently studying both a BTEC Level 3 and NVQ in Civil Engineering, after which I intend to continue my education to degree level.  I believe the apprenticeship route is by far the most beneficial way to begin a career as you are constantly exposed to the problems and solutions of the industry and I can apply these experiences to my studies.”
